Benson books about upper crust rivalries - especially the particularly vicious rivalry between the two women who are the title characters - in two charming English villages between the wars. There is nothing quite like the selfish, vain, and social-climbing twits in these classics, and I loved every minute of the time I spent with them.

Benson is a superb writer, a man of great style and wit, and anyone who is looking for light fare, authored by an intelligent hand, need look no farther than his books. The collection got me happily through a very rough recovery after knee surgery.

I started with the first book in the collection and read all the way through to the final one. I was very sad to find I'd come to an end and will greatly miss the characters.

Not for everyone. Jane Austen comes to mind. No admirable characters you would want to identify with, but an aloof and humorous narrator holds it all together. This is why the dramatizations don't work. No entertaining narrator, just the excruciating characters. It helps to have visited Rye, a very nice place.

Also an interest in things pre-WW2 will keep you going. I enjoy Benson, in small doses, but that's just me. One person found this helpful.

The volume is easy to handle while reading in bed, and the print font is very easy on the eyes. As an old lady, living in a small town I was amazed at how many of my friends and neighbors appeared in these stories.

Mapp and Lucia became friends with whom I enjoyed spending time.

If you have never lived in a small town you may not "get it", but you will find many smiles an more than a few LOL!

What a fun read.

The premise of two elderly ladies in combat for control of a town's society is a gem. Both Elizabeth Mapp and Lucia Lucas are formidable in their own right I am looking forward to other books in the series. If you haven't read the Lucia books including the one entitled 'Miss Mapp' , you really should. But she shall ring the bell and I won't be dictated to and I won't be called Lulu.

However there is no immediate danger of that. Come, Georgie, let us go home and finish our sketches. Then we'll have them framed and send them to Liblib for the picture exhibition.

Perhaps that will convince her of my general good will, which I assure you is quite sincere.

But apart from that, Georgie, I shall take steps to teach her manners if she's not too old to learn. She will be sorry; she will wish she had not been so rude.

In consequence she presented an icy demeanour, and if her voice trembled at all, it was from excessive cold. She had sent one basket of tomatoes to Miss Mapp, but these had been returned and Miss Mapp had written an effusive note saying that they would be wasted on her.

Lucia had applauded that; it showed a very proper spirit. Lucia's face became a flint. Brooking no opposition Georgie knew it was useless to protest when Lucia got that loud, inspired, gabbling ring in her voice; she would cut through any opposition, as a steam saw buzzes through the most solid oak board till, amid a fountain of flying sawdust, it has sliced its way.

And so many movements of Mozart. I began to think he must have discovered the secret of perpetual motion, and that we should be stuck there till Doomsday.Views Read Edit View history.

But months ago now, she, with her very vital and active personality, had felt a most natural craving to immerse herself again in all those thrilling interests which made life at this Elizabethan village of Riseholme so exciting a business, and she had not yet been able to make up her mind to take the plunge she longed for.
