McGraw-Hill's AccessMedicine. Succinct and comprehensive, this book provides students with an overview of the principles and concepts of epidemiology and illustrates the complementary relationship between population-based science and the care of patients. Thoroughly updated, this new edition features epidemiologic implications of bioterrorism, "patient profiles" within each chapter, and USMLE clinical vignettes within the "study question" section of each chapter.
Period prevalence provides the better measure of the disease load since it includes all new cases and all deaths between two dates, whereas point prevalence only counts those alive on a particular date. Prevalence is also most meaningfully reported as the number of cases as a fraction of the total population at risk and can be further categorized according to different subsets of the population.
Incidence to Prevalence The relationship between incidence and prevalence depends greatly on the natural history of the disease state being reported. In the case of an influenza epidemic, the incidence may be high but not contribute to much growth of prevalence because of the high, spontaneous rate of disease resolution.
In the case of a disease that has a low or zero cure rate, but where maintenance treatment permits sustained survival, then incidence contributes to continuous growth of prevalence.
In such cases, the limitation on prevalence growth is the mortality which occurs in the population. Obviously, prevalence will continue to grow until mortality equals or exceeds the incidence rate.
An example of this relationship is shown below. The disease incidence is per year.
As seen, prevalence grows until the death rate equals the incidence. Another feature of the prevalence growth that should be noted is that during the earlier years the growth of prevalence is very fast, but slows towards zero growth after 15 years. Chapter 2.
Medical Surveillance and Outbreaks of Disease. In: Waning B, Montagne M, eds.Deciding whether a published study is a casecontrol study or a caseseries report is not always easy. We have enhanced our discussion of evidence-based medicine and continue to emphasize the important concept of the number of patients that need to be treated with a given intervention in order to prevent one undesirable outcome number needed to treat.
Vital statistics are based on data collected from the ongoing recording of vital events, such as births and deaths. The most widely applicable reasons are mentioned first.
Bias can be due to the manner in which subjects are selected or data are collected and analyzed. It derives from the Latin word status, meaning manner of standing or position. Medical epidemiology Author: Chapter 13 focuses specifically on how to read the medical literature and provides checklists for flaws in studies and problems in analysis.
The term epidemiology refers to the study of health and illness in human populations, or, more precisely, to the patterns of health or disease and the factors that influence these patterns; it is based on the Greek words for upon ep and people demos.
