So in terms of longevity, I scores this a 4 since this approach isn't really how students build digital circuits anymore.
At the same time I appreciate the value of building some of these simple circuits to help build foundation knowledge before moving to the more complex topics. It is apparent that this was the intent of the author also because the book does not go on for a thousand pages building every digital circuit ever imagined.
